Immune Support was formulated to help support and improve immune
function. Your immune system is responsible for protecting the body against
bacteria, viruses and cancer. It creates antibodies, which react to specific
foreign agents. In most cases, an antibody is created the first time the body
encounters a germ. The antibody then remains in the body, preventing a
second infection by the same germ.
Vitamin A plays an important role in immune function and in maintaining the
integrity of mucosal and epithelial surfaces. Vitamin C is arguably the most
important water-soluble biological antioxidant. It can scavenge both reactive
oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species and may also help to support
the immune system. Zinc is a biologically essential trace element and is the
second most abundant trace element in the body. It plays a role in immune
function, wound healing, reproduction, growth and development. Zinc
supplementation may improve immune function in healthy elderly individuals
who are marginally Zinc deficient. Selenium is included for its crucial
anti-oxidant role.
Vitamin D also seems to have immunologic activity. In models of autoimmune
disease, vitamin D seems to act as an immunosuppressant. This might
explain why increased vitamin D intake is associated with a lower risk of
rheumatoid arthritis. The anti-oxidant activity of Vitamin E makes it essential
to the immune formula.
Echinacea owes its effectiveness to a proven ability to stimulate the immune
system. Researchers have found that it causes an increase in the number of
white blood cells, spleen cells, and other disease-fighting agents such as
T-helper cells and interleukin. It also has an interferon-like effect on viruses.
Reishi constituents seem to have a variety of pharmacological effects
including antioxidant, antitumor, immune modulating, cardiovascular antiviral,
and antibacterial effects. Shiitake contains very low concentrations of
lentinan (0.02%), which has antitumor effects.
Quercetin may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antivral,
immunomodulatory, anticancer and gastroprotective activities.
Thymus extract has putative immunomodulatory activities.
